Knowing what to do in Nova Scotia can be very challenging to say the least. Why might you ask? Because there can be a lot of hidden gems found around the city that you may or may not know about, and even if you did, where you may find them. Navigating a province like Nova Scotia may be complicated when there is not a whole ton of advertising going on for promoting these places. I asked on Twitter what different things people enjoyed to do, and as answered, these are their suggestions. Don’t worry, there is a little something for everyone to do regardless of which adventure you would like to tackle. Indoors, Outdoors, Near and Far from the city. The possibilities are completely up to you!

Good book at public library was a repeated answer when I asked the question, what should you do around Halifax in the winter. As you can see by the stunningly incredible architectural design this is one spot you may find yourself enjoying a book when the weather outside is colder. With the breathtaking windows you can people watch and relax with a warm beverage of choice for hours. With the endless amounts of books you can read to the multiple places to get curled up in, this is one place you do not want to forget about if you are looking for something to do around the city. Not to mention, the best part is this costs absolutely nothing for you to enjoy. Just make sure if you decide to get yourself a library card, that you don’t keep them past due or you could face some charges for being late. From the busy streets of downtown off of Spring Garden Road there is sure to be lots of action or even a peace space which ever you were to prefer. Though be cautious also, This library is now used by multiple homeless people daily who seemingly seem to also be addicts. I talk about dangers around the city here in regards to my blog about encampments.
Bird watching or more specific heading to Sheffield to see the eagles. Obviously this is not going to be for everyone when it comes to activities to do around the province however this is an option. If you haven’t gotten them already binoculars would be a great investment if you wanted to do this as a passion or hobby, but in the big scheme of things the biggest expense for this activity to do would be the gas and where you decide to go in order to see the birds. Particularly in the fall and winter around Nova Scotia you can find these birds sandpipers, plovers, willets, pheasants, bald eagles. With Sheffield Mills only being just over an hour from Halifax it makes for the perfect day trip away from the busy lifestyle. Weather permitting of course!
Museum of Natural history is a classic when you want to really immerse yourself into what is happening within Nova Scotia and the world. The exhibits within this museum all have some significant relation to Nova Scotia. Gus tortoise whose info you can find here is one of the many permanent exhibits that are available to see here all year round. Being a Nova Scotian or a child growing up here, chances are you have also been to this museum multiple times as well on a school field trip. There is a lot to see and do here that you can really get immersed into all there is to see. From different animals to places and creatures on and off of land, this is a good variety of exhibits for any person who may not be completely decided on visiting a specific museum.
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is another great choice for things to do around Nova Scotia if you are looking at more of an educational stand point. Or looking at just learning a bit more of the history around the Maritimes. This particular museum has anything and everything to do with the surrounding oceans. With permanent exhibits which include Theodore Tugboat as well as the Titanic and The Halifax Explosion. See many artifacts, trinkets and treasures that have been collected over the years here. Another great time had for kids or adults looking to spend an afternoon peeking around at the history.
If you are looking for something a bit more exercise friendly you can always check out the skating on the Emera Oval. This is a spot that is directly in Halifax and you are seeking something to do right in the heart of the city. if you are looking for a relatively cheap activity you can check this place out. No skates? No problem. You have the ability to rent skates or a helmet (Pre-Covid) to save yourself some money. One thing for sure, is dress according to the weather. This is an outdoor ice rink that you will be subjected to the elements. It also wouldn’t hurt to check out the schedule in case you end up there during a scheduled maintenance time. None the less this is a great place to go to get some fresh air and a workout in the process as well.

As you can see, there really is anything and everything to do within Halifax or Nova Scotia. Whether you would like to do something in the city or travel a few hours away. You really can pick and choose adventures here. There is something for every type of person from the indoor thrill seekers to the outdoor journey goers. Even different types of weather too. Though I would not recommend trying to go to the Oval when it is raining outside, one fall and you may find yourself soaks (that is if it even is open due to a slushy track!).
And then lastly, the good ol fashion sledding. Just find yourself a local hill. Whatever you may want in terms of speed and steepness, after all you have to be the one going up and down dragging a toboggan!
