Buckle up folks, the Nova Scotia House of Assembly is back for their Fall session this September 8th, 2026. Though if you blink, you may miss it. If the previous years under this government has done anything, it’s completely shorten the fall session to under 2 weeks each year. 2024 had a whopping 10 day session due to the rumors of an election being called. Last year, 2025, lasting an utterly embarrassing 8 days. One of the shortest in the provinces modern session history.
Budget cuts were the hot topic of this Spring 2026 session. With major announcements for many areas in the province Including tourism, arts and culture, Mi’kmaq and African Nova Scotian programing and even various services for people living with disabilities. A sum of over $300 million in cuts to these respected places. Backlash from community members across the province promoted Houston to go back on a small portion of these cuts and under a week later he reinstated just over $50 million back to their respected areas.
Let’s also not forget Premier Tim Houston, Self Appointed Energy Minister in October 2025 only to step down and replace himself with Marco MacLeod in May of 2026. This was after using funds to the sum of nearly $15,000 dollars for a singular trip (As reported by CBC). And before the province would see Marco’s past via Frank Magazine regarding his misogynistic rap promoting a swift response from hundreds of people across the province including various elected officials and groups such as Adsum for Women and Children in Halifax. As of writing this nothing has happened with his removal, however Marco did write a hand written apology after scrubbing the internet of these audio recordings.
Nova Scotia also is in the middle of a historic political party race. The Liberal Party of Nova Scotia is currently holding their leadership race. The two candidates are Amanda Mombourquette, and the Hon. Becky Druhan. Former party member of the Progressive Conservatives (PCs). Since leaving the party she has hammered questions to the PC’s and their Ministers regarding various issues in the legislature. Most never fully being answered. The new leader of this party will be chosen in November 2026, in just a few months.
Budget cuts have still been felt across the province. Warnings from the Nova Scotia Auditor General Office were left ignored with the Nova Scotia Government over spending by Billions. With the Finance Department stating they needed flexibility in responding to needs of Nova Scotians Swiftly. You can read previous reports with the recommendations to the province here. This has left people who had relied on extra finances for their particularity needs. Local star author, Rachel Reid, has donated $300,000 to their local libraries in Annapolis Valley Regional Library to keep them open from the 26-2027 year.
I had also attended a community hall session for my area which hear various members state their concerns with various areas of government. Including the province. One concern multiple residents had was the last of exits through Beaver Bank if there were to be a wildfire. Provincial MLA for the area Brian Wong, stated that the plan for a bypass for the area was “On the plan, however whether that is a 5 year plan, or 10 year plan, there is no way of knowing. Another member stated their care at the Cobequid Health Center was prolonged and diminished due to the wait time, more specifically just getting through registration. I even wrote about my experience with the provincial health care here in the last few weeks. Brian spoke about the quick surgery times regarding knee and hip replacements, though completely ignoring the issue at hand.
What can you do? Let me tell you!
- One thing you can do is contact your MLA. You can find the list of MLA’s for the province here. Whether you choose to phone them by telephone, send them an email. While most are easily seen on Facebook, Many don’t count this as a form of actual communication.
- GET LOUD. If you have contacted your MLA and are finding no results, Talk to someone. Local Facebook Groups, Including the provincial one here at Ask Nova Scotia: Anything Goes (Mostly) . This is their jobs. If you are communicating respectfully and they aren’t responding your fellow constitutes deserve to know this is who their elected official is and if they aren’t listening to the people who voted them into that very position. - Listen to old legislature videos. They can be found on Youtube Here. If anything try and see how much your MLA is actually advocating for their communities and people who they serve politically.
This government has had lots of fall out since the last election. So much so they have had to go back on small items when the public outcry has grown far greater than they anticipated. Holding the people we voted in accountable for things is the very least we can do. I myself also head from a grandmother whose grandchild wont have a Teaching Assistant due to the fact there isn’t funding. A senior asking for help for themselves and their husband who are aging, and finding yard work challenging. They made $100.00 too much money to be able to apply for grants or financial help in these areas. The actions of this government need to get better.
