We live in a world where so much relies on social media. From our jobs to our social lives, it really is rare to see someone who isn’t involved in one or more social medias (Aside from my dad, but he does use snapchat though!). But with everything in life there has to be some sort of balance. Whether that be eating or working out or maybe even it has to do with spending time on the virtual web. Regardless of what you are doing social media usage is important to really make sure that you spend your time wisely and know when you should take a break. Just like anything in excess, using social media and the internet constantly does not have a good impact on your life!

One indicator that you may need to take a break even for a little bit is that you become obsessed with information on there. It doesn’t even have to be the news or anything important but there are some moments that you need to realize with yourself that you need to step back. Maybe you find yourself “doom scrolling” and you need to put down whatever you are using. I know sometimes I have found myself tweeting on twitter and at some point I may have a mini popular tweet. I have muted my own tweet so that I dont get notifications at all anymore on it because it makes me obsessed with checking it and seeing if I am in fact able to see the traction it is getting. It is super important to recognize that and take the moment away. A lot of people cant do that and are unable to acknowledge it. Learning when you are getting too deep into something to do with social media is a huge first step. This also would fall into the category of you maybe check one of the social medias that you use, close the app, and immediately open it out of habit that you have no idea what you are actually doing. Chances are nothing has changed on your timeline to the extent that you need to open it that fast but here you are doing it over and over again.

Another reason to take a moment away is you find yourself spending too much time on there. For example, myself I know sometimes I can spend a lot of time on them. I write here, I am a streamer, I also want to make some what of a financial income through the internet however I find out how. That being said, when it comes to the weekends I find myself barely touching anything. I mean I look through a few timelines but a lot of the times if we are busy doing family things or whatever I find myself not interested in keeping tabs on things unless a major event happened. Even then sometimes I find myself discovering major news events after the fact. We have so much time that we can find ourselves losing hours upon hours sitting with a phone or mobile device in our hands. Not to mention if you work on a computer it can be easy to get distracted and focus on other things beside work too. I am guilty of this as much as I would like to deny that!
Some apps might even have a setting where you can limit your screen time or even monitor it. Facebook for one that I can think of has this where it can tell you your average time spent online or per week. This can be really useful if you are in fact looking for a way to reduce your time spent there and you are not sure where to begin. You can keep track of it and consciously try to spend less time there. not to mention, you may think you aren’t spending that much time online when in reality you may be spending more than you should be too! I know I sometimes feel like I spend way too much time on social medias when I check the apps I really dont spend THAT much time. And vice versa when I thought I haven’t spent a lot of time there when I actually may have. I personally have not normally checked these as I would like to think that I am pretty mindful with my usage when it comes to my life online. Another thing you should do if you haven’t already too, turn off all your notifications! Stop getting every post, tweet, photo and everything send to your phone so you HAVE to open the app to see things. You will see them when you see them!
At the end of the day, social medias are not going anywhere. They make billions of dollars for many people every single year and to try and eliminate them from your life may be far more challenging that it is to just monitor yourself. If you are even thinking about maybe you are spending too much time on your social media accounts chances are if the thought has crossed your mind you may need to take that step back. One thing that I also find helpful, charging my phone in another room or “forgetting” it. The chance of me getting up to look at something when I have 2 kids to look after is very low. It also can help time pass a lot faster when you aren’t constantly looking at your phone or monitoring some new notifications. And if you are worried about missing a call, as my Mom always said “If it was that important, they would have left a message”.
